Settled 2,000 years ago by invading Romans, Cambridge on the River Cam grew wealthy during England’s medieval and Tudor ages due to royal patronage and hardworking merchants. The date given for the founding of its University is 1209, when scholars from Oxford began to gather students and teach in Cambridge. It is now home to 31 colleges that make up the University of Cambridge.

History unfolds at every corner, in secret courtyards glimpsed through ancient oak doors to alleyways that have seen students rushing past to get to class for more than 800 years.

Cambridge can be reached by car or train, just about an hour and a half north of London. It’s easy to spend several days exploring the cobbled streets, walking along the river, visiting historic sites and museums, shopping and eating in this charming town.

Join art historian Mary Woodward for a look around this walkable town as we discover treasures, large and small, in Cambridge.
