Author Andrew Warburton talks about Fairies in New England

Join the Topsfield Town Library (co-sponsored by the Topsfield Council on Aging) as we welcome Andrew Warburton, author of New England Fairies: A History of the Little People of the Hills and Forests to the Topsfield Town Library for a talk about fairies in New England!

The talk will introduce 8 fairies from New England folklore and for each it will cover: origins of the folklore (i.e., French Canadian immigrants to Northern Maine); image and appearance of the fairy; the habitat where the fairy is said to live in the New England states; and major events associated with the fairy. The 8 fairies are as follows:

  • Lutins (French Canadian / Northern Maine)
  • Pixies (English / Marblehead, MA)
  • Hobs (English / Hartford, CT, and Plymouth, MA)
  • Mikummwessuk (Wabanaki / Maine)
  • Banshees (Irish / RI, MA, NH)
  • Pukwudgies (Wampanoag / Cape Cod, MA)
  • Water fairies (Wabanaki / New Hampshire)
  • Granny Squannit (Wampanoag & Mohegan / CT, MA)
