History of Public Art

Saturday, May 43:00—4:00 PMMeeting RoomTopsfield Town Library1 South Common St., Topsfield, MA, 01983

Public art has been a source of civic pride, government marketing, and economic renewal since the Emperor Diocletian filled the great Baths of Caracalla with mosaics and sculptures to Fearless Girl, who has became a featured attraction on Wall Street. From courthouses to libraries to town halls to busy harbors, public art has graced, and at times been the source of controversy, to inspire and contemplate.

In this one hour lecture, Meg Black will examine some of the most famous examples of public art.  Come hear the stories, conspiracies, and tales of woe. . . my tax dollars were spent on that!

Meg Black, PhD is the Chair of Art Education at Salem State University. She is an artist whose work is included in several public and private collections. She may be reached through her website www.megblack.com.
